Trump: Tariffs will 'come off' only if there's a 'fair' NAFTA agreement

President Trump on Monday tweeted that his recently declared tariffs on steel and aluminum could be removed if nations agree to a “fair” North American Free Trade agreement.

“We have large trade deficits with Mexico and Canada. NAFTA, which is under renegotiation right now, has been a bad deal for [sign in to see URL]. Massive relocation of companies & jobs. Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum will only come off if new & fair NAFTA agreement is signed,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“Also, Canada must treat our farmers much better. Highly restrictive. Mexico must do much more on stopping drugs from pouring into the U.S. They have not done what needs to be done. Millions of people addicted and dying,” the president continued.

The comment comes days after he took most by surprise in declaring that he will be instituting a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum imports.

Shortly after his remarks, the stock market dropped over 400 points over fears of a trade war.

While Trump appears to be willing to negotiate, White House National Trade Council Director Peter Navarro has stressed that, for now, the tariffs stand.

“I understand if we get a great NAFTA agreement, and (US Trade Representative Robert) Lighthizer is trying to do that, that would be a great thing for the American people, but at this point in time, 25% on steel, 10% on aluminum, no country exclusions, firm line in the sand,” he told Fox news Monday morning.

What do steel and aluminum imports have to do with Mexico and Canada? (Except in a very marginal way.)

It is all part of the big picture of American trade deficits that other presidents have let stand.

You clearly have no idea how trade works. The last thing we want or need is a trade war.

Curtis, under previous admins. trade with the US was not fair. The US suffered more than a 68 billion $$$$$ trade deficit. Largely due to other countries violating trade agreements and the US doing nothing about it. If it happens, a trade war will not last long as the other countries recognize the size of the American market and can not afford to do without it. Trump will not cave on this and will use other methods to put pressure on the countries that cheated or are cheating.

Edited up date. I just found out I was mistaken. The total trade deficit is over 800 BILLION $$$$$$ Not 68 BILLION. Think about the good that money can do staying in the USA.

What does that have to do with NAFTA? And how to steel and aluminum imports figure into it?

I was wondering that too.
I was also wondering how laying off more workers than the entire US steel industry currently employs, would be good for our economy / country?

It is all part of his plan to Make America Great Again. If stopping alum. and steel imports or taxing them over NAFTA hurts alum. and steel exporting countries, they will put pressure on NAFTA countries to settle.

Again, what does NAFTA have to do with aluminum? Or steel?
