Interesting Times

My wife and I stopped by for a long-overdue visit with her godmother and her cousins last Friday, and I was somewhat reticent about discussing politics among the myriad of subjects we covered. Why? Because I know one of the cousins was a die-hard Trump supporter during the primaries and her siblings are all Republicans. The matriarch, my wife's godmother, is the only Democrat from a family of six.

Anyway, I was startled when we started speaking about the wall, and the Trump supported chimed in angrily and [sign in to see URL] Trump. I think she's seen all that's taken place after his election and realised the monumental error she made in supporting him, so that's one vote off the table for him in 2020 (presupposing he lasts until then).

Her older sister is an ATF agent and more from the libertarian wing (rump?) of the GOP. She didn't vote for either candidate in the 2016 election, much to her shame. She hates Trump, but the one thing she couldn't get over was Hillary lying. As a federal employee, that's a big thing for her. She told me about some agent using a company card to pay for prostitutes. He confessed, paid back the money, and then was allowed to keep his job. However, another agent used a company card to buy $30 of gas, tried lying to cover it up, and then was fired because of it.

Now, I understand Vicki's standpoint (the ATF agent) since she's a very honorable person, after working for 20 years for the FBI and then ATF. I told her I held my nose and voted for Hillary, since it was more of a vote against Trump than for Hillary, but Vicki just couldn't do that. I admire her principled standpoint, but that's how scurrilous, pathological liars can sneak in as "winners".

Anyway, it was refreshing to hear their perspectives, and know they're not just lobotomised ideologues who'd support Trump no matter what. Even more refreshing was being able to discuss different viewpoints in a face-to-face setting instead of the usual tribal, combative settings of an Internet medium.

There will always be more that binds us together as a family, rather than dividing us along partisan lines, and it was great to refresh that oft-maligned viewpoint.

It's always refreshing to remember that there are supporters on both sides of the fence who don't follow party platform lock-stock-barrel.

I don't think there are many people who actually support everything their favored politician says and done on every issue all of the time. I think reasonable people are willing to acknowledge in front of opponents that their party is actually wrong on a thing or two.

Or 50!

Drug legalization comes to mind FIRST, among many.

Shar,

I couldn’t agree with you more. There are some Democrats I’d like to “Negan” with a good tap to their noggins, but I wouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

I firmly believe there’s more which binds us than separates us as a country, and stepping back from the quasi-anonymity afforded by social media is refreshing. Even better, engaging those with whom we disagree can oftentimes reveal many things we have in common.

I'm pretty sure Trump and the gang are using the usual tribal, combative settings full time in Washington DC, and not just on the internet. Apparently some people have not noticed it, or feel the the conservative movement is NOT obnoxiously trolling America and everyone on the left.

1 example?

Overturning Obamacare.

They could not come up with legislation to pass it, and also reform healthcare.

Why?

Because the whole idea was based on the troll lies of the conservative movement. Its really hard to write bull !@#$ legislation based on GOP bull !@#$.

And to this day, go ask a conservative if they are FOR HEALTHCARE REFORM? And they will say YES. (face palm).

Loch, just like in the years leading up to the Civil War, there were some 30% of Americans ready to turn traitor and fight for a status quo that involved slavery, there are that SAME 30% ready to go rogue to maintain White supremacy today.

There is clearly an effort to "divide and conquer". The same corporate interests seem to control whichever group is in power. The people are deliberately polarized.

In the 60s, I think the polarization was no nearly as orchestrated. People on the left were aware that the conservatives were escalating the war more and more - at first to save face for getting involved. Then they had to double-down each year to cover up the lies and desperately trying to save face more and more.

People on the right didn't want to believe. They believed in America, were very patriotic. They believed that our leaders would do what is best for the country. Many were WWII vets and didn't want to accept that the values they fought for were going down the toilet.

But fast forward a few decades. The crony-capitalists noticed that things in DC worked so much better when people fought among themselves. They orchestrate the division, which is evolving into outright hatred and intolerance of differing opinions. The people are so distracted by the left hand, they don't pay attention to the right hand.

The only way to fight this is, as LL said, find common ground, refuse to be manipulated; discuss differences intelligently. And be willing to accept flaws in their own side.
